Remember Grim’s Brothers and Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales and stories? Or the miracle in Cinderella’s story that still captivates you even now.
We all have pictures and special mementos displayed throughout our home. They bring back wonderful memories of life’s most precious moments. In addition to these treasures, are there other special tokens or little inspirations that remind you of a magical moment still imprinted on your heart? They can be as simple as your favorite fairy tale quote or a picture capturing an unforgettable moment of triumph in your favorite movie. Perhaps there is a sweet scent that reminds you of a special place you hope to return to someday.
Bring these items into your surroundings so that you can enjoy and be inspired by them.
Each month I place something new and old on my table to remember or read. J.R.R. Tolkien’s original art drawings used to create The Lord of the Rings take me back to those incredible scenes of hope inspiring faith. I don’t want to ever forget what happens when you give a mouse a cookie. Little Red Riding Hood’s courage told in my little book of English Fairy Tales is wonderful inspiration at my finger tips.
We all have them. Special ways that we celebrate birthdays, words we choose in the blessings prayed before meals or preparations to greet the arrival of a new month.
Here are my own special prayer practices and unique inspirational traditions:
Starting the day praying the Rosary to Blessed Mary
Reading the Psalms
Wind chimes playing where we can hear them
A practice of quiet time – placing new and old books on my coffee table each month
Physical fitness routine – I have discovered the bliss of walking to enjoy nature
Wearing a special symbol that inspires me. In this month of Valentines Day, I’ll wear Lord of the Ring’s “Erwin’s” necklace as a reminder of love.
Some of the greatest stories I share today were told to me as a little girl by my grandmother. We have the same name and I loved every moment I had with her. My grandmother “Maria Teresa” told me about the real miracles that happened in our family as well as the tragedies where faith brought Christ’s light. I don’t only remember her stories, but the way she told them. Her laughter as well as the tears cried when remembering the loss of her sister Lucemelia in a terrible bus crash. She told me everything with such vivid tenderness.
It’s important to keep our family stories and memories alive. After all, our story begins at home and flourishes every time we tell one to someone else.
